Life doesn't always go the way you want - usually life veers in a different direction to what we think or want to happen.

In Christian Media as in any media the same happens. It's not IF but WHEN it happens. We can view this in two ways:

When Life throws you an adventure - take it!

I can't deal with this happening

What an opporunity to share with others

Regardless of where you stand socially, spirituality, politically, in your work etc HOW you choose to view life will have a positive or negative effect on your outlook. Life isn't always going to go the way you would like - that's what makes life an adventure.
The challenge is to enjoy the experience and learn as you journey.

Enjoy life - live to make a difference!

A New Year of Possibilities

2012 A New year of possibilities. A New Year of Opportunity. A New Year for Christian Media to impact the community in which we broadcast, print or socialise. We may update our web sites, change our logos, reword our on air promo's, but what doesn't change is that people need to hear that God loves them and Jesus Christ died to set them free.

A New Year of working together - a team of people who work in various media organisations and yet our common bond is broadcasting the life changing message of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

¹⁴ How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? ¹⁵ And how can anyone preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!”^{Romans 10:14-15}

In our world where there is so much bad news, let's continue to broadcast the positive message of hope in 2012!

Be Careful what you give this Christmas

When thinking of what to give people as presents - be careful of what you choose. It seems that our society is truly losing all sense. I am saddened to think where we will be in just a couple of years unless we stand up for what we believe. Australians need to stand up for our way of life - camping out, boiling the billy, 4WDing out bush and now .....well read this and make your own mind up.....Click Here

Our freedom - to express who we are is being slowley erroded away. The principles and foundations such as marriage (between and man and a woman for life), the family and freedom of expressing our faith are all being slowley taken away. And for who? Minority groups. Does the average Australian even really understand what is happening or do we really no longer care as Australians what happens to our great nation?

If we're going to make a difference then it starts with us - the average, ordinary, Australian!

Family and Marriage groups are calling for Australian citizens to make a stand for marriage. We invite you to join us at 10am, Martin Place, Sydney CBD, on 3 December 2011 and reject the proposed redefinition of marriage.

Gerard Calilhanna, National Marriage Coalition said, "The Labor Party is holding its National Conference in Sydney, 2-4 December 2011. The Labor Party policy on marriage will be debated and decided on at this conference. It is imperative that the conference delegates do not vote to change the party's position on marriage, either by formally supporting homosexual 'marriage' or permitting a conscience vote. The Labor Party must stand firm on this issue to reinforce the importance of traditional marriage for families and the common good of our nation. To do otherwise will permanently alienate traditional voters from Labor's heartland."

Mary-Louise Fowler of the Australian Family Association said, "Come to the Stand4Marriage rally wearing ruby and gold colours. If you haven't got ruby and gold, wear red and yellow. Join civic, church and pro-family leaders at 10.00am in Martin Place, Sydney on 3rd December 2011 to show our support for politicians who are standing firm on marriage. You are also encouraged to wear a Marriage Rosette which is the symbol of the love found in natural marriage. It is this love that produces our children and it is this love that we must protect and preserve. These Marriage Rosettes will be available on the day but can be purchased in bulk from the Australian Family Association www.family.org.au ".

Graeme Mitchell, Family Voice Australia said, "The Marriage Act states that marriage means 'The union of a man and a woman to the exclusion of all others voluntarily entered into for life'. Marriage is fundamental to stable families and communities. Family Voice is supporting the Stand4Marriage Rally at Martin Place on 3 December 2011. We call on all people of goodwill to do the same."

Warwick Marsh, Dads4Kids Fatherhood Foundation, said, "Marriage is the best way to protect our children's biological birthright to a mother and a father. We call on the praying people of Australia to support the Stand4Marriage Rally through concerted prayer. It is only prayer, soaked in love that will make the difference. As St Augustine said, "Pray as if everything depended on God and work as if everything depended on you."

Peter Madden from Heal Our Land Ministries said, "On the same Saturday of the Stand4Marriage Rally the ALP will debate the homosexual marriage issue at the Sydney Convention Centre in Darling Harbour, Sydney. We must send a clear message of support to those politicians who have not lost their moral compass and who will oppose the push to redefine marriage."

Recording CSA's

Phew! Have been so busy recording CSA's. There is so much information available if you just ask. Well I don't even always ask anymore and the information keeps coming in. The wonderful thing about this is that local Community radio stations can assist their listeners with up-to-date information.

If you don't know what's going on in your local community take the time to:

listen to your local community radio station
join a community group
visit your local library or information centre

If you have the responsibility to oversee Community Service Announcements for your local community radio, talk to your local council, information centres and community groups. So many Not for Profit groups aren't aware of how their community radio station can assist them in promoting their FREE community events. They will thank you for taking the trouble to ask them "How can we help you?"

Recording a CSA

Recording a CSA (Community Service Announcement):

write down clearly what you are going to say including spelling out dates and hard-to-prounce words
write in "conversational"style - as if you were speaking to a friend
practice what you have written by speaking it out loud - how does it sound, have you covered the main information, does it meet the time criteria (e.g. 30 secs)
book in time to record in studio
follow proceedure in studio to make sure equipment is working and audio levels are set correctly
record csa and then listen back as a means to check - how does it sound, are words spoken correctly, have you spoken too fast/too slow?
once you have made corrections/notations on written sheet then record and edit (and save!) CSA

Be aware that each broadcasting centre will have proceedures in place, so make sure you are familiar with these. Finally, don't be afraid to ask for help or feedback from those who work with you.

And when he broadcast, the listeners were doing variojs things as well as listening - mending clothes, reading a newspaper, driving a car, playing with the children - and they heard hardly any of the words he spoke. And some of the listeners liked the words spoken by the Chrisitan broadcaster; but old habits were strong, and soon choked any wish to lead a new and better life.
But some of the radio listeners heard gladly the broadcast of the Good News of Christ, and their neighbours could see the difference in the way they lived.

O'Brien's Creek Camp @ Mt Surprise

We've just returned from a few days out west. Well a little out west. As we travelled through places like Mt Garnet, Mt Surprise, Georgetown, Forsayth and Einsleigh. I reflected on what I take for granted. Hot water. Supermarkets, Chemist shops! Cool breezes. Christian radio and media services. Weekly Church services.

I am always encouraged by the resilience of those who live in the bush. The commitment, hard work and dedication to living off the land and for those whose services and businesses support these towns should never be underestimated. These people just like us need to be encouraged. They need life lines of hope. They need to know they are appreciated and valued.

I was missing listening to Chrsitian Radio as so many of the towns we visited don't yet have a Chrisitan Radio service in their local areas. Please pray and uphold those who live in our more remote parts of Australia... any be thankful you don't have to collect firewood daily to fire up the "donkey"for hot water or start a generator, or drive 2-3 hours to the nearest major town.

I am thankful to God for placing me where I am...

All my kids are racing and my husband. Me? No I'm the support team - you know the drinks, the spare parts, tools, chairs, bandaids and food :-) 'Hey...it's an important job!

This has come to my attention.
Currently The Marriage Amendment Act 2004 that was passed on 13 August 2004, defines marriage as: “a union between one man and one woman to the exclusion of all others, voluntarily entered into for life”.

We need to stand up and protect our marriages and families...

From www.marriageday.org.au "It has recently been announced that on 17th August MP's will be asked to report to Parliament the views of their electorate on same-sex "marriage".

It is now more urgent than ever to gather your friends, neighbours, church group and colleagues and come to Canberra on August 16th.
Marriage is too important for you to sit by and leave it to someone else to defend. At times like these it is crowds that talk!

This is you chance to be a part of democracy in action. Come in bus loads to support natural marriage. A repeat of the numbers that attended the successful 2004 rally is what it will take to warn all politicians...

The pain is real, but God's grace is powerful.

Team work - Helping Each Other

I am so proud! Last night one our local Christian Community Radio Station Volunteers did her first official interview - she was the interviewer. (We'll let you know who she interviewed in the coming weeks......)

Team Work isn't about one person doing one job. It's about encouraging each other, mentoring, and facilitating opportunities. Interviewing isn't a skill that comes naturally to everyone. Often we have to practice, practice and practice more. That's what this volunteer has been doing. Lots of practice.

To be successful in learning a new skill/s there are a few things you need to be willing to do:

listen - oh how the mighty fall because they think they know it all! We've all been like this. We need to humble ourselves.
have a go - when your mentor gives you the opportunity to have a go, take it!
take every opportunity given to practice and practice what you've been taught
be willing to admit your failures, but don't stay there. Get up and try again. Success is simply getting up again and again until you achieve your goal.

A word to Mentors and Managers - give your people a go! Trust them to try. I realise how easy it is to have the "it's just easier if I do it myself"attitude. I know, because that's my tendancy. I've learnt over the past couple of years that you soon work out if someone doesn't trust you. It isn't a nice feeling and you won't keep your volunteers (or staff) on board with you.

I've been in organisations where you come home each day really wondering WHY you're even bothering to try. If you are a volunteer organistion, your organisation won't keep volunteers for long if they feel they can't be trusted or given a go. Sure they'll not always get everything right, but keep encouraging, keep leading, keep giving opportunity. Most of all, show your volunteers they are valued more than the job they do.

I have spoken to different people, and had the priviledge of meeting some of them in Christian Media and I never cease to be inspired, and encouraged. The knowledge, passion and talent within Christian Media is truly inspiring. Sometimes, you just have to stop and praise God for the people who daily live out their faith sharing through radio, print, social media, TV and personal sharing. Now if that doesn't inspire you to do that same what will?

Making a Difference

Most people want to make a positive difference by influencing the world around them. But how? How can YOU make a positive difference in your family, community, town, region or even country? Maybe the world?

Sounds too hard? No. You begin with one. One difference - it may even be how you view the world around you. One. One person, one voice, sharing a dream. Then another joins the one and another and another and so on. All of sudden, there is a group, a team working with a common focus.

Imagine if you could make a difference and bring a positive voice to your community. Well you can. It starts with:

prayer
research possibilities
prayer
tell others
prayer
impart the vision/goal
prayer

Get the idea? I know that I've included prayer more than any other point listed. Whether you are in Christian radio, Christian television, Christian social media or Christian print media, prayer is the most powerful aspect of any ministry.

Let me tell you a story....A small group of people wanted to establish a radio station in their town but they were honest with me and said that they only had limited funds and time to raise the funds. it wasn't enough to cover the full cost of establishing the radio station. So we took it to God in prayer. I let others I knew know of the need. Someone I was speaking with said to me, it isn't possible in the time frame you have to raise the funds necessary. Knowing that my God is the god of achieving the "impossible"I said, God will provide the funds needed in the time available. After that conversation, it was less than a week and the necessary funds were available. Today that small community has a Chrsitian Radio Station. They love it, pray for it, tell others about it.

Be a positive voice in your community. Encourage others who dream of making a difference. Their dream may be the factor that changes the world around us.

Live life. Make a difference.

Team Work

Team Work. A successful team is a united in purpose group of people working together for a cause/venture. They are focused, connected and communicate with each other.

An unsuccessful team spend their time bickering, fighting, trying to get their "agendas"on the table and come across to those looking at their group/organisation as people who can't get along.

So what's your Media organisation looking like? A successful team? That's the aim.

A successful team:

knows their mission statement/purpose/intent
everyone can contribute and participate
people feel and know they are trusted
key people can make decisions and be confident they are able to do so
people assist each other - training, encouragement, assistance
people feel valued and wanted within the team
the leadership value and encourage the team
if someone needs help they feel confident asking
each member of the team know what the organisation/ministry is about and
why the organisation/ministry exists

The Hope Project continued...

Have you been listening to "The Hope Project"on the Vision Radio Network? So many people need hope. For some the past few months have been especially hard with floods (Eastern States), fires (WA) and cyclones (FNQ). Sometimes hope seems so distant, yet that's all we cling to.

That's why bringing hope through positive, family-friendly, radio is so important. Recently I was at an event and chatting to a few ladies, whom I had never met before. We began speaking about radio and I soon found out they were avid Vision Radio listeners. One lady told me that she turns the radio on every morning when she starts her day and it is her companion at night. They even told me when the station had stopped working (the week before) and how they missed not being able to hear it. They were so glad when it came back on air the next day.

For so many Christian Radio is a lifeline. When I hear stories of how our Christian Radio stations speak HOPE into people's lives, I am reminded that yes, this is worthwhile work. That's what keeps us pushing forward to install more relay stations across our local area as well as further afield.

When I began recording a written script proved and still does prove, to be an important part of the overall recording process. Many people don't have the natural ability to be completely fluent, especially when you put them in front of a microphone(myself included). Whilst some are naturally at ease with a microphone or recording device, many are not.

Scripts can alleviate the tension and assist the person recording to stay on track about the given subject. Your script should be written in a friendly and conversational style. However no excuses should be given bad slang, bad language or lack of preparation. Remember you script needs to be written as if you are speaking in conversation with another person you know.

Practice you script - that is, read it OUT LOUD. If your script doesn't flow or isn't easy to say then re-write it differently. Keep your sentences short and to the point. Remember Radio is heard not seen. Often you will hear that the audience sees with "the theatre of the mind"on radio. So think about how your listener will interprete your words.

Write everything including dates, weights, measurement as spoken words not print words. For example 25th June would be "twenty-fifth of June".
Keep you language simple and clear. Watch your meanings and don't ramble on. Listeners listen with their fingers and can easily switch radio off or change stations.

Watch where you place punctuation in your script. Wrongly placed punctuation can cause your words to mean something different from what you intended. Have someone else read your script before you record or go to air. If they don't understand it - change it!

I've had people tell me that scipts don't allow them to be spontaneous. This depends on a) the prestener, b) their experience, c) the research they've done on the given subject and d) how they write their script.

Being spontaneous is all well and good however you risk "waffling on"and listeners will simply tune into another station or switch you off. Worse they won't support your station, and as a Community Radio Station this could have a negative effect you don't want.

When recording smile but keep your words to the point, make sure your meanings are clearn and you know what you are talking about.

In the world of Media how does a Christian Media organisation/ministry get their message out?

Sounds crazy doesn't it? Yet we have a great message to get out to people and find ourselves wondering on the "how to" so often. I am no expert but I am willing to learn. So here's what I've learnt so far:

research - find out who is in your "audience" that is your community
have great content. Your content should be timely, truthful and relevant to your "community"
research how to take your message out - do you use streaming, Facebook, Twitter, websites and the huge amount of social media as well as the more traditional resources of radio, print and TV?
how can you communicate with your "community"

For example if your "community"spends hours on social media such as Facebook and twitter then that's where your organisation needs to be also.

P eople Who are you trying to reach? What are their social activities?
O bjectives Why is our organisation/ministry doing this?
S trategy How does our organisation/minitry adapt?
T echnology What do we use?

Remember Social Media is not "all" but part of getting your organisation/ministry's message out.

Relationships - The Core Message

Our Core Message in Christian Media is really about Relationships.

The best relationship we can encourage is a personal and dynamic relationship with Jesus Christ. As those who work in different roles and positions within Christian Media our goal should be to see others grow and fulfill their potential as well as encouraging life growth.

We need to be radical - to know that we can do what we need to do, know our Vision - our Vision statement needs to be transformational. That is everything we do focuses on assisting people to build their relationship with the Lord and fulfill their potential.

Being relational means putting people first. The greatest outcome for any Christian Media organisation is to see
a) people develop a personal relationship with JC
b) grow in their Christian Walk
c) fulfill their God given potential
d) engage in a life process not a program

With those who work in Christian Media Leadership should be encouraging staff and volunteers to grow towards being more Christlike. To assist in this process Leadership should be developing an environment that encourages:

prayer
generosity
innovation
volunteering
relationship building

Christian Media is not just an organisation. It's a part of a life changing ministry.

Sponsorship

Sponsorship. What is it? In the commercial radio world one would say they are 'ads'. Sponsorship is a way Community media organisations can raise funds and one way for local businesses to support their community radio station.

Who is a Sponsor: A sponsor is an individual or organisation who provides payment in cash or in kind to a community broadcasting licensee or a program provided under the service. This could be by way of a cash donation or contribution of goods or services that would otherwise be an expense for the licensee in operating the service. The key feature of a sponsorship announcement is its acknowledgment of the financial or in-kind support given by a sponsor to a community broadcasting licensee or a program provided under the service.

The announcement may also promote the activities, events, products, services or programs of the sponsor, provided that it contains an acknowledgment of financial or in-kind support by the sponsor of the licensee or a program.

Sponsorship announcements must be genuine. A licensee must be able to demonstrate (if asked) that the sponsors featured in announcements are actually financial supporters (in cash or in kind) of the licensee or a program provided under the service." (from ACMA guidelines)

Sponsorship Tags-What are is?

In Community Broadcasting, a sponsorship ‘tag’ is a common term that refers to the on-air label affixed to material that enables a licensee to acknowledge support in cash or in kind given by a person or an organisation to a licensee or a program provided under the service.

A tag must state the name of the person or organisation that has given support in cash or in kind to the licensee or the program. Each individual sponsorship annoucement should have its own tag, not one tag for a block of sponsorship announcements.

Is there a limit on the minutes per each hour that a radio station can have sponsorship?

A radio station may broadcast five minutes in any hour for community radio licensees. It is important when timing sponsorship announcements to count the whole announcement, including the tag and music, exactly as it is broadcast. To ensure the limit is not exceeded, licensees should count the time spent broadcasting sponsorship announcements from the start of each hour.

Deafeating Discouragement

In Christian Media we are priviledged to have many people who are passionate, dedicated and really committed. At the recent CMA Conference, I learnt much. Some I will share over the next few weeks but the following really spoke to me - I hope it also encourages you.

Discouragement is a 'disease'that affects all humans.

Causes are:

fatigue (tired)
frustration (overwhelmed)
failure (best laid plans fall apart)
fear (what if????)

The Cure?

Read Nehemiah Chapter 4 as starting point.
Rest your body
reorganise your life (you may even be doing the right thing the wrong way)
remember God will help you (Matthew 7:7)
Resist the discouragement. We choose to get discouraged. Fight Back! (Atttitude)

Experience is teaching me that nothing is normal, everything changes and relationships are extremely important in whatever organisation you are involved in, for me, Christian Media.

Today is Day 2 of the CMA Conference here on the Gold Coast in beautiful Queensland!

What am I learning? Relationships matter. If more than anything else a broadcaster does, relationships matter. Most of us view relationships as "transactional", you know, like buying lunch. You hand your money over and the person serving hands over your food. But that doesn't build trust, respect or understanding, commitment, or genuine care and concern.

Building relationships takes care, time, understanding, commitment and shared experiences. You have to put yourself in the place of being available to understand what the other person is going through. What can I do for this person? How do they need help? How can I help meet their need?

As Broadcasters we need to think about how we relate to our listening audience. Is it transactional or relational? And this extends further than just our work places but into every area of our lives.

As Christian Broadcasters, we want to facilitate the opportunity for people to encounter Jesus Christ. We can't save them, we can't change them, but we can broadcast a message of hope. Don't view your listeners and supporters as transactional, build a relationship with them.

Many of our local Christian Radio services in the area I live are Narrowcast services. These services are able to provide affordable radio to lower density populated areas. Considering that the whole Atherton Tablelands area has a population of approx 46,000 people, operating huge Community based services in each town is not viable. However, smaller narrowcast services can provide a positive alternative for our local area.

I'm Learning about Paperwork. Now don't me wrong. I realise that Christian Minstries need to have appropriate paperwork in order. Yes - even these groups are not exempt from having everything in place. Looking at what organisations need to operate, comply and exist in administration has caused me to reflect, Ïf we are so busy with all this paperwork, when do we get out and share Jesus with people?"

Reflect on what paperwork your ministry has to have in place just to operate on a daily basis. My mind buzzes with OHS, P&P, Induction policy, and this one - Policy about making Policies?!

I know all this has to be in place, but let's not forget what really matters. People need to meet Jesus Christ - they need to know that God loved them so much that He sent His Son to die on a cross to save them from their sins. God wants them to have a life changing, heaven bound relationship with Him.

I guess in our Ministries we need to keep everything in perspective. Paperwork - yes it's important. But it is only one part of what we do. People? Well that's where our heart should be and where most of our time should be taken up. In Christian Media, it's about people. Reaching People. Encouraging People. Being there for People. Praying for People. Challenging People. People reaching People with a message of positive Hope and Encouragement.

Paperwork. Some love it.

Some hate it. Some people think it's so important and others really couldn't care about whether it existed or not.

Paperwork. Whether we like it or not it is a part of Not-For-Profit organisations. And as I have been learning very quickly, it's important to have an organisations paperwork up-to-date and usuable.

One area that is often overlooked regardless of what NFP organisation you are involved in is the area of paperwork. It's often left to the Secretary or Treasurer to sort out. Hours and hours of time is spent by these people sorting through what seems to be endless reams of paperwork. You usually end up with a list that is longer than when you started with questions like, "why do I need this policy?" , "who has this grant acquittal?", "when did this decision get made and where is the minute to support the decision?"

A few simple tips to help:

DON'T leave the job to one (1) person
Breakdown the workload - tackle the urgent first and the rest over time
In meetings keep a book that records motions (decisions made) that will affect future committees
Archive what is not needed but needs to be kept (e.g. old minutes of previous years'meetings)
Set aside regular time but don't forget you have a life outside

You may love or loathe paperwork, just keep it in perspective.

Community Radio In Australia

Did you know that radio has been available in Australia since the early 1900's but it wasn't until the 1970's that Community Radio was an option for local communities. Prior to this the only radio stations available were run by government or commercial.

"In the 1960s, Australia's social, political and cultural landscape began to change and people wanted the Australian media, in turn, to reflect these changes. Many specialist groups, including ethnic and Indigenous communities, political activists, students, academics and classical music consumers, began to lobby for their own radio broadcasting licences. This community radio movement was an important force in the birth of community radio and remains a vibrant force in the Australian media today." In Australia the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) oversee radio and television licences. In community broadcasting the Community Broadcasting Association of Australia (CBAA) is the national peak body representing community radio and television stations around the country.

There is much more to radio than just tuning in to your local frequency. And much more to broadcasting than just "getting on air" to have your say. Radio Stations are places of creativity, research, people management, production, training, paper...., record keeping, CD's, computers, software, microphones, recorders, phone lines, and laughter, encouragement and going on a "journey" together.

People have access to support, prayer, quality programming, positive music and talk shows. Behind what we see or hear are dedicated people answering questions, researching better ways to support the community, raising much needed funds to establish services that benefit many people.

So before you say "they're just after my money!" Why not ask yourself, "How can I help make a difference in my community?" Maybe, by becoming apart of Christian Media you can reflect Jesus to others, make a positive difference and find out just where you can serve.

learn that we can lead, or even mentor
find out that there is more to life than ourselves
learn something new

Never Say Never

When I get discouraged, I pick up the book by Dan Wooding titled "Never Say Never". It's the story of the Rhema Broadcasting Group and it is the story of a modern day miracle.

To read what Dick Berry and those who, believed what many thought was unattainable, always encourages me. People like Dick Berry inspire those of us who are the receipients of a truly remarkable legacy. Christian Media has a rich heritage because of people like Dick Berry.

One of my favorite pages is pages47-48 where we can read how Radio Rhema was called this name. "Rhema is Greek for the inspired spoken word, a word spoken with absolute intent and direction. That name would be so significant for this radio ministry." ... (Roman 10:17) (page 48 Never Say Never, Dan Wooding)

I encourage you to source this book and read it. We have much to thank God for and a rich heritage of those who have served the Lord in this amazing ministry we call Christian Media (Christian Radio)

Cyclone Yasi - on the other side of the radio

Cyclone Yasi

We have seen the pictures on TV and heard on radio the devastion caused by Cyclone Yasi especially to the areas of Tully and Cardwell. The broken homes, buildings and infrustructure are flashed across our TV screens but often we don't see the pictures or hear the stories about how radio transmitter points are affected.

What happens to a Community who loses their positive voice of hope that was being transmitted into their town? More than ever these communities need to be able to have access to positve music and talk. In the late hours of night and early hours of morning, when people can't sleep they need a friend. And that's what radio is - a friend.

I am so proud! We've had some new members join our Operations Team at 92.3FM Mareeba. This morning (Saturday 5th February) one of our newest team members presented an interview he had arranged and recorded. Now we've just been through Cyclone Yasi, he is really busy at work, there's heaps to do, but in his own time he researched and prepared his first interivew. Way to Go! I am so proud of our team.

It just goes to show that those who are passionate about Community Radio can really make a difference. If you live in our local Atherton Tablelands area especially around Mareeba, tune in . You never know... you might just hear yourself on radio.

Cyclone Yasi - on the other side

Well, it's morning here after Cyclone Yasi came through. We're so thankful to God as our area here on the Atherton Tablelands didn't take the brunt. Please spare a thought for Tully, Mission Beach and some of the small areas surrounding. They took quite a hit.

A part from no power our street/areas seems to be presently in good shape. Outside currently looks like a normal rainy day with a brisk breeze. Couldn't say that last night. To everyone whose been contacting us, praying for us and Texting, thank you!

Yasi is Coming

Well, by now I think pretty much all of Australia has heard about Cyclone Yasi, if you've seen the weather maps on TV you would know there's something off the coast of Queensland. She's coming. In the Far North we've prepared the best we can. Whilst it's frightening for many, and we really don't know how much damage Yasi will inflict upon our area, what has been coming out already is how people help each other.

Neighbours checking neighbours and helping to prepare. People contacting each other from across the country. Churches holding prayer meetings and organising support for those who may be affected. People opening their homes to friends and family to stay.

Natural disasters tend to bring out the best in people during the most difficult times. Radio and TV services are scrambling to keep the information coming through for as long as we have electricity. Please consider and think of all those in these media's. Many of them are in the front line of where Yasi will cross over the coast. These people are working to bring you the latest information from the Emergency Services and different Government levels including your local council.

The Christian Radio Stations don't just provide information, they also provide encouragement, hope and a "lifeline" during this difficult time. Christian Radio is much more than a signal on the air - it's sending the message of hope that God loves all people through the airwaves.

Can I leave you with one more point? Some people ask Why does God allow these natural disasters to happen? Well, who said He did? Please Australia - stop and think about what decisions we're making at all levels of government and society. Reflect on 2 Chronicles 7:14

Cyclone Yasi

Lake Tinaroo, Atherton Tablelands

Well, we are now preparing for a BIG cyclone. We can't afford to be complacement, nor panic. It is a part of living in the tropics in Far North Queensland. We need to plan, prepare (clean up, pick up and put away), we need to also pray. We've already heard on the news that FNQ will need to be prepared to be self-sufficient ( well, most of us do already know this after Cyclone Larry), but panic will not help.

I went to our closest "large" town which is about 12 minutes away. It took 1 1/2 hrs to get a few things that would normally take about 20 -30 minutes to get. I had plenty of time to watch people. Some were calm, some had the "well no good worrying" look and some were terrified. I don't know how else to explain the look on their faces. Sheer panic, worry and concern. Now you may be thinking, we she doesn't seem too worried. After Cyclone Larry I learnt that panic causes fear. So the last couple of days we've been quietly planning, preparing and praying.

What I love doing

In the area we live, on the Atherton Tablelands, my husband and I get to travel around with Christian Radio and meet ordinary people who go out of their way to bless and encourage others. On Saturday (29th Jan) we went to Ravenshoe to look at one of the local LPON Stations and check it.

Ravenshoe Anglican Church

One of the local Church ladies was simply wonderful. She encouraged us, prayed with us and for us, made our children some lunch and played games with them. The power of encouragement should never be underestimated. The love of God that shines through people as we saw in this lady and the ordinary acts of kindness she bestowed on us made the day so much better.

And out of this we made a new friend, met a fellow believer and were able to leave knowing the Christian Radio station is loved and wanted in that town by local Christians.

If you have a local Christian Radio Station in your town, why not let others know? Why not become involved? Whether it's a small relay station (you can promote it, help care for it) or a Christian Community Station (you can help in the day to day running of station - you never know you might the next "voice" they've been looking for :) ), what you will find is there are people you've not met yet who will become your friends and fellow partners in reaching out to your community.

Christian Radio - what does it mean to you?

When you think of Christian media (or Christian Radio) what does it mean to you? For some, we embrace it passionately. For others it's just those "god people" doing their thing.

Whatever you think about Christian radio/media have you taken the time to actually listen to it? Yes...that's right tune into the local frequency your Christian Radio is on and listen to it. Not just for one minute but for maybe 1/2 hour to an hour. Many people speak badly of what they don't understand, or even take the time to listen to. Often they speak badly of something they are afraid of because what they hear means they have to make choices about their lives and situations.

For those of us who embrace Christian Radio whether via satellite services or local community broadcasting, it's a way to hear family-friendly teaching, music and talk. I enjoy seeing my kids singing along with the variety of songs that play and telling me about what their favorite speaker has shared on radio. Christian Radio/media helps people to know they are someone who can make a difference. God loves you.

Leadership and Direction

Leadership and Direction. Two simple straight-forward words. Many people, however, struggle to do one or both. So let's take a brief look at both.

Leadership. Before we get started, lets define leadership. Leadership is a process by which a person influences others to accomplish an objective and directs the organization in a way that makes it more cohesive and coherent. Leadership is a process whereby an individual influences a group of individuals to achieve a common goal.

Simple? Well it should be, but many people are either
a)afraid to take a leadership role, or
b) don't want the responsibility of the role. Note though, they often like having the "position title"!

Leaders influence. You can't be a leader and not influence. If you're not influencing others you are not leading. Leaders can influence either positively or negatively. You decide it you want a team that works together or a team that splits. In community radio a team that is cohesive, focused and coherent is essential. If it's not, the community radio station/group will fall apart. And usually quickly, unless a leader arises that can help the group re-focus on their common goal.

I used to find that taking Leadership roles were extremely daunting. Yet as I have reflected over the past 30+ years of my life, I realised that I am often in leadership roles. My suggestion to you is this - think about what you've achieved in your life and the times when you may have taken on a leadership style role. You'll be surprised how often you do!

The other word we'll briefly look at is Direction. There are a number of definitions but we'll look Direction in light of the following:

Management, supervision, or guidance of an action or operation.
An instruction or series of instructions for doing or finding something. Often used in the plural.
An authoritative indication; an order or command

Direction is all of the above-mentioned definitions and more. In this article we're considering this word in relation to Leadership and Community Radio. Simply when a Senior Member of Staff (let's use the position of Station Manager for an example) gives a direction, it is to be followed. If the Station Manager is leading to build his/her team then when a direction is given, it is to build the team and the station.

When an instruction or series of instructions are given to achieve an outcome, it is not for the staff or even volunteers to question or argue the direction. That is abusing authority. Yes I am saying that. When an order or command is given, it is not usually given to hurt but to build and to achieve a postitive outcome.

For example you may be the person who records Station Announcements and your Station Manager may give a direction for a series of Station Announcments to be recorded. Once you have been given the information, it is not for you to start arguing about which ones you'd like to record. You have been assigned a task it is is your job to complete it.

Perhaps you have been assigned to write an article, then don't argue about it, do it. You may think, of course I'll do it - it's my job. But you will be surprised how many people will argue either in your face or nowdays via social networking! (A word of advice- think before you rant and rave on social networking, your boss may be reading it!)

In Community Radio, just like any real business, -yes Community Radio is a real business - Leadership and Direction are essential to the success and long term sustainability of the station.

It's important to get behind your Station Manager and his/her team. Focus on the common goals, not on your own agenda. Community Spirit is important in community radio - it's not the place to "push your own barrow".

When you're sitting down to write either one CSA* or a number of them it's surprising how long you can stare at a blank piece of paper...or in my case....a blank Word Doc on laptop....and think what I am going to write?! Yes, I have some basic information, yes I know it has to be kept to 30 seconds(you try writing a 30 sec CSA, it's not quite as easy as you think) but what am I going to write?

I have found that if I begin by writing short sentences with the basic information, I can pull the basics together quite quickly. Then comes the editing. I haven't yet practiced much on scripts....they are much more challenging. Most scripts I try to practice with are only a couple of minutes long and mainly to get an understanding of what it takes to put a script together.

Even for CSA's scripting is important. Having a script means you can practice the same words over and over until you achieve the tones, and effect you're looking for without forgetting the words. Even those who have experience in front of a microphone can forget what they want to say at times.

Over the past six months, I have learnt much more about: pacing the words (not rushing), breathing, editing (you know we say lots of words we don't need to say!) and timing.
Ask my Station Manager and Programming! They have to endure listening to me! :)

Community Radio - Teamwork

Teamwork. What does it mean? The Pocket Oxford Dictionary (6thEd,1978) tells us Teamwork is a "set of persons working together, combined effort, co-operation, join in or as a team, join in common action."

Community radio thrives on teamwork. It can't survive without a group of people working together in common action. Unlike commercial radio, most people involved in community radio are volunteers and receive no financial remuneration. What they do receive is the satisfaction of a job well-done, and skills that can assist them in other areas of life and work, as well knowing they are giving back to their local community.

Out of local Community radio stations across Australia come unique and specialized programming that bring out the local stories, events and issues within the area each station broadcasts. Programming is tailored to meet the needs and interests of listeners in each broadcast area.

But this programming doesn't just happen. Many, many hours are put in by local, passionate and committed people who service their communities through the media of radio.

Many local community radio stations regardless of their definition (e.g. Christian, general, fine arts) run on limited resources. Technical and financial challenges are a constant part of daily life in a community radio station along side the need for more volunteers and skills. Yet the local areas into which Community stations broadcast recieve a rich mix of diverse programming, music and information that complements their listening audience.

Teamwork, like Community radio cannot be achieved by only one person. Teamwork survives on relationships- built up, encouraged and with a common focus/goal. Ask yourself:

How could I contribute to my local Community radio Station?
What skills, resouces would assist my local community radio station?

So why not get involved in a local Community radio station near you?

Are you aware of what happens in your community? Many of us don't even think about the services, programs, and events that take place each and every year within the areas we live. For all these things to happen, you need dedicated, committed, community loving people.

As my family love to see people given a voice of hope, we have ventured into Christian Radio. Here I will reflect on one aspect we are involved in - relay services. Recently we were in a small town about 3/4 hr drive from where I live to help the local Christian Community with their small Relay Station. Now many people wouldn't think about what happens behind the scenes so that when they turn their radio on there is something to listen to. But it takes much more than pressing a button or moving a knob.

Our part is "simply" to help the communities find suitable sites, and put a relay service on air. But the team who produce the day-to-day program work very hard. To put together interesting, relevant music, teaching, programs, interviews, and announcements isn't just "slap it together and she'll be right mate". No, it's real commitment and dedication and caring about the local listeners.

To see people talk about what they are hearing on their local relay service, the music and programs is very encouraging. To work alongside a dedicated team of people is inspiring.

So take the time to say thank you to those who work hard to bring you quality Christian Radio programming.

Community verses Control

I know that often I am writing about "Community" and what that means in the context of radio and also where we live.

What never ceases to raise it's head is "control". When you work in your community - whether that's a sporting organisation, general interest group or even radio you will find a small number of those who like to control. Control in itself isn't necessarily a bad thing. We all need some control:

proceedures to keep us safe
knowing our role
WH&S
good communication

But the control that isn't healthly in an organisation is the "control" that likes to abuse others, "build your own castle", and/or a take over bid.

Whilst this might happen in a public/private company, it is not appropriate within a community organistion. Healthly communication, training and implementation are necessary. Those who wish to have their own way at the expense of the team and purpose/vision of the community group really need to step back and reflect about why they are apart of that group in the first place.

Control that abuses, puts others down and tries to push its own agenda is uncalled for, unnecessary and inappropriate in a Community organisation. Control will very quickly kill creative ideas, teamwork and moving the organistion forward for the benefit of the group and those they seek to serve.

So when you're thinking about why you are apart of a Community Organisation really search yourself:

Do I want to give back to the community?
Do I want to make a positive difference?
Am I willing to allow others the opportunity to be apart of the creative ideas process?
Am I willing to learn new things or see a different point of view?
Why am I in the group?
Who do I want to help?

These questions are just a few to reflect on. I encourage you to promote community but limit control.
Your Community group regardless of what area it serves in can make a positive difference.

As a starting point for your family Christmas can I encourage you to read Luke chapters 1 and 2 from the Holy Bible?

In Our Local Community

Wow! What an amazing night we had (19 December) at the Mareeba Churches Carols evening - "Churches Together" event.

Our small Christian Community Radio team is growing and taking up new challenges. I am so proud of these guys and girls! One of our newest volunteers stepped up and took off with the voice recorder and recorded some great Christmas messages - well done!

Preparing for broadcasting

Being in Community Radio isn't about telling your community but about sharing in what happens in your community. It's about providing a platform of opportunity for those interested in radio and providing a forum for the local people to raise issues and work together to make changes.

Community radio isn't just about the music mix or the collection of programs being aired; no it's much, much more. It's about people working together, it's about being in "family", it's about having a go, it's about dedication, commitment and being stretched.

As a team our local Christian Community station 92.3FM continues to grow and take up new challenges.
Whatever organisation, team or group you are apart of, remember to say thankyou to your fellow team members, get used to be stretched out of your comfort zone and enjoy being apart of your community.

Amazing People

I have just finished editing an interview about some truly amazing people....you know often we "box" people and want them to be how we think they should be. But the reality of life teaches us that this isn't the way it is. Our perception can be way off. When we look at others our first impressions sometimes make us biased and that will affect how we interact with those we meet.

What's normal? I used to tell my Mum I just want to be around "normal" people. But normal to me, may not be normal to you.... so for each of us "normal" means something different. And that's not a bad thing. Over the past couple of years as I have had the priviledge of meeting some truly amazing people, I have seen that "normal" is just our own state of mind trying to control the sphere of our influence. God's Word tells us that we are made and formed just the way we should be (Psalm 139) so perhaps next time you or I go to "box" what we think someone should be like or look like, perhaps we just need to ask ourselves instead, "How does God see this person?" When we look at each other through God's eyes, we just might catch a glimpse of the amazing person we're about to meet or have just met.

How do you view each new day? Is it "I just have to get through today somehow!" or "Thank you Lord for a new day of opportunity!"

You see, how we approach each day we live will determine whether we live a life of difference, or a life of survival. A life of survival is just existing. A life of difference is living. Existing is not living. Been there - it's not enjoyable. Living is having fun, taking on challenges, laughing, crying, loving, being with family and friends, meeting new people, rejoicing in the Lord and being thankful.

Many people exist. Few really live. Sing a new song to the Lord!

Getting out in your local community can be fun, challenging and extremely rewarding. Many people think that they have to get, but the old saying "It's more blessed to give than to receive" is very true. When you give to others, help out in your local community it brings a real sense of fulfillment. You get "stretched" in your thinking and attitude, you actually receive more because you can make new friends, learn new skills. But at the same time, others are being helped by your commitment to share and assist.

So when you're thinking about how you can make a difference, think "Community". Why not get out there and check out what's available. You never know, you are just the person a local community group is needing right now!

There is a very special event happening on the 4th December 2010 at the Atherton Showgrounds in Atherton on the beautiful Atherton Tablelands, Queensland. I am unashamadly promoting this because our local CHRISTIAN Community Radio Station 92.3FM radio4tvr is going to be attending and attempting a live broadcast. For those who have checked our http://www.radio4tvr.com.au/, read our tweets on twitter or know the team who voluntarily work for the station are aware that in the last few years we have come a long way.

Whilst we don't have all the "big bang" equipment you need to attempt something like this, we do have ONE big, wonderful lifeline! Prayer.....prayer.....prayer..... We are so excited to be going to the Atherton Tableland Carols by Candlelight event and are looking forward to a fantastic night of singing, awesome local performers and musicians. Often we don't appreciate the talents and skills locals have until you attend an event like this. This event has been going for a few years now and every year the local committee organising the Carols by Candlelight event go above and beyond and make it even better. So thanks to the Carols Committee and the local businesses who get behind a real family-friendly community event!

Do you know the value of your volunteers? Being a volunteer across a number of organisations myself, as well as in NFP executive roles, I have the priviledge of working with volunteers who bring a wide variety of skills and talents. So who is a volunteer?

The history of community radio

Radio has been in Australia since the 1920s, but until the 1970s all radio stations were either commercial organisations or run by the Government.

In the 1960s, Australia's social, political and cultural landscape began to change and people wanted the Australian media, in turn, to reflect these changes. Many specialist groups, including ethnic and Indigenous communities, political activists, students, academics and classical music consumers, began to lobby for their own radio broadcasting licences. This community radio movement was an important force in the birth of community radio and remains a vibrant force in the Australian media today.

Community broadcasting licenses

In the 1970s, the Australian Government made a number of community broadcasting licences available, establishing what it called the 'third tier' of radio. This meant that now there was a third kind of radio station operating in Australia as well as the existing commercial and government-funded stations.

5UV, or Radio Adelaide as it is now known, was Australia's first community station. It was established in 1972 and continues to broadcast today.

The Australian Broadcasting Authority (ABA) was established in 1992 to deal with issues associated with radio and television. The ABA was responsible for issuing broadcasting licences until 1 July 2005, when the ABA and the Australian Communications Authority (ACA) merged to become the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA).

ACMA regulates the way Australian radio stations behave and decides who qualifies for the various kinds of broadcasting licences. For a radio station to qualify for a community licence it must address a perceived need within the community and it also must be a strictly non-profit organisation. Community radio licences are made available in different areas of Australia, depending on the needs of those areas as determined by ACMA.

Chaplains in Our Schools

I don't normally call attention to issues such as the following on my website however, people need to be aware of challenges that Law-abiding, Bible believing people face (yes, us who are called Christians). So I call your attention to the program aired on Compass regarding Chaplains.

Just one point here....maybe more Australians should find out their true history about the settlement of our nation. We didn't have a civil war, many Christian people helped establish much of our school system and welfare. If you take out the Christian services today from our communities you may just be surprised what this nation would lose. Something to think about...

Back to this issue at hand: I realise that people who truly care about our next generation, are attacked because they are prepared to make a stand and live out their faith in action. Chaplains are no exception - they are people who care about our students. Even though many of our Chaplains are Christians the Schools Chaplaincy program is not limited to having a Christian Chaplain.

It does make you wonder however, that if people are so keen to challenge the role of Chaplains in the school and the valuable work they do, what are they (those who are challenging) contributing? I am a parent at a local state school and have, I guess unique opportunity of being once a student at the school, and then a parent plus being involved through the school's P&C (which all parents can be apart of, if they choose to be). We don't have a Chaplain, but some of our local High Schools do.

When you see children and what they and their families go through, why is it so wrong to have someone who truly cares be available to sit and listen? In our busy lifestyles of needing more money, more things, we (all of us) can lose what's really important - time with our children and as a family. Quality time is only one part of it, quantity is just as important. Kids need to know they are loved, not bought. They need to know they will have the basics - food,shelter, clothing - and they don't have to be the big brand names. But most of all they need YOU - the parent investing in their lives.

Chaplains are people who are available to listen, to care. If they happen to be Chrisitan Chaplains then at least the children should be able to witness ethical, moral values that will assist them through life. You try finding it pleasing to have a bad mannered child talk abusely to you and see you like it. It isn't pleasant.

So before people who claim Christian Chaplains are stepping outside of their roles reflect on this - what am I teaching as a parent? What am I modelling to my kids? As a Christian Parent, I am very aware of what my kids see in me. I'm not perfect, no one is. But I believe kids are not stupid and they will see through people and personal agendas. Maybe the question is not really about Chaplains (i.e. Christian ones as they seem to be the ones being discriminated against) but maybe, just maybe it's about us parents and what we are failing to impart to our children? Something to reflect upon.....

Community Radio means involvement

What comes to your mind when you think "Community Radio"? Is it a bunch of people wanting to have their say? Maybe you think music (the type will be determined by your preference)? Perhaps you think - oh that's people wanting to share with their own cultures. Well, yeah, all these points are relevant to Community Radio, but it's much more than that.

Community Radio is a platform from which locals can share, impart, and raise the important issues of the community in which they live. Community radio provides a means to:

be a hub for local information and services
allow upcoming musicians an opportunity for airplay
allow storytellers an avenue to share
allow locals to share their stories, issues and events
provide a place where people can learn new skills,
provide an avenue for people who are interested in this media to learn about the software, hardware and technical side of radio
give people an opportunity to try something new (you might just be the next big reporter of the news!)
allow community to work as a team

Community radio isn't just a 'good' idea, it's a great idea and it's not something that we should take for granted. There are rules - they are there to protect people and keep it fair. In this media you can learn lots of skills, maybe you can help teach new skills. I've seen people who have never recorded anything now record a weekly program, help with writing and editing their program.

I've seen people who have never interviewed anyone, now out and about chatting with locals about what's important to them. You see, you'll never know what you can do until you get involved.

Be different - take a walk with community radio and see where it takes you!

Hearing Yourself on Radio

Have you ever heard your own voice? Some people totally freeze...a common comment I get is "I never thought I sounded like that!" I know the first time I heard my voice recorded I thought "that can't be how I sound?!" But guess what? That recorded voice of yours has power. Power to express thoughts, inspire, impart and encourage others.

In my role in our local community radio station, I get to meet ordinary people (like you and me) who have extraordinary stories, information on local events and issues and positive life moments to impart. It is a priviledge to sit down with members of the local community and chat with them about the issues and moments in their lives which mean so much to them and often encourage others in our community as well.

Having motivated and committed volunteers to assist is very encouraging and when you are in a leadership role, it's so important to thank your team, encourage them and give them feedback to assist them in stretching themselves and getting out of their comfort zone. I know this as I have a friend who weekly checks in on how much I'm out of my comfort zone. But saying this, the feedback from local people in the community whom you chat with and approach for interviews is usually very positive.

And.....you might just hear yourself on radio! So why not check your local Community radio station and offer some of your time. You'll learn skills, meet amazing people, find out what's happening in your local area and in turn, you encourage the other staff and volunteers too!
